Keyword clustering for micro-sites: how to rank without backlinks
Stop chasing backlinks you'll never get. Here's how to dominate long-tail keywords by clustering content on a small site.
Backlinks are great, but if you're running a micro-site (under 50 pages) you're not going to win link battles against established domains. So don't fight that war. Instead, win the content war by clustering keywords.
Here's the tactic: take 10-20 related long-tail keywords, create one comprehensive pillar page that covers the topic broadly, then link out to 5-10 supporting posts that each target one of those keywords. This tells Google your site is authoritative on that subtopic, even with zero backlinks.
I tested this on a 30-page storefront selling Notion templates. Picked a cluster of 12 keywords around "project management templates." Wrote one pillar and 5 supporting posts. Within 6 weeks, 8 of those keywords hit the first page. Total backlinks to the site: 3. Give it a try.
